About Me

I’m Chris Arnesen and my ham radio license callsign is KU7PDX here in the United States. I was licensed in 2005 at the Technician Class level, upgraded to General Class in 2007 and finally to Amateur Extra in 2015.

For over 25 years, my wife and I have loved getting in the car and going on exploratory trips here in the Pacific Northwest. We started in the 1990s with a 1988 Ford Escort Pony and later a 2003 Subaru Impreza RS — mostly sticking to the asphalt. We wanted to do more off-road trips and camping, so we bought a 2005 Ford F250 SD and learned about the hobby of overlanding — most recently adding a 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium to our fleet.

Professionally, I’m a broadcast engineer and chief operator for a television group here in Portland, Oregon. My primary field of responsibility is the operation and maintenance for our main and auxiliary broadcast transmitters, along with our low power translator stations throughout northern Oregon and southwest Washington. In all, I have about 17 mountaintops I travel to on a regular basis, so keeping up on my off-road skills is a top priority.

About Overland Ham Radio

Having an interest in overlanding and ham radio has created an interesting intersection of hobbies.

Overlanders not only have the need for local radio communication when traveling as a group or as a family at a campsite or point-of-interest, but ham radio also opens the opportunity to communicate with others around the world and share their experiences. I hope to provide my tips, reviews, and experiences with them so they can have more effective radio communications.

Ham radio hobbyists are frequently taking camping trips or doing events like SOTA or POTA. Getting out of the urban areas can make for very fulfilling and successful ham radio activations. I hope to provide my tips, reviews, and experiences with them so they can be more effective off-road.
